Taiwan expands AI use in healthcare, sports and culture

 

Taiwan is expanding the use of AI across healthcare, sports technology and digital culture as part of a broader smart innovation strategy.

 

Taiwan is accelerating efforts to integrate artificial intelligence and digital technologies into healthcare, sports and cultural services, as the government seeks to position the island as a global leader in smart applications and data-driven innovation.

At a meeting on May 20th, Tuesday, Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council reviewed initiatives led by the health, sports and culture ministries aimed at improving daily life through technology, ranging from interoperable medical records and AI-assisted fitness systems to immersive digital exhibitions.

 

Taiwan rolls out nationwide healthcare data platform

Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare said it had completed a key phase of a nationwide healthcare data integration project based on the international FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standard.

The system allows hospitals using different information platforms to securely exchange patient records in real time without replacing existing hospital systems.

The ministry said three major healthcare networks — Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Mackay Memorial Hospital and Chung Shan Medical University Hospital — have already achieved cross-hospital medical record interoperability.

The project is expected to reduce duplicate medical tests, improve referral efficiency and support future AI-assisted clinical decision-making.

Taiwan has also developed what officials call a “FHIR Box,” integrating data conversion, storage and exchange functions into a unified platform designed to support automated health insurance claims, infectious disease reporting and medical research.

Officials said Taiwan is the first country outside the United States to fully implement several international medical terminology systems, including LOINC, RxNorm and SNOMED CT standards adapted for large language model applications.

The government said it plans to expand international cooperation in federated learning and healthcare AI systems.

 

Government targets sports sector with AI and data tools

Taiwan’s Sports Administration outlined plans to build a “sports technology ecosystem” using AI, motion sensors, image recognition and wearable devices to promote mass participation in sports while upgrading the domestic sports industry.

The strategy aims to lower barriers to exercise participation and create new business opportunities in sports data services, smart venues and digital fitness applications.

Officials said future sports facilities could include AI-powered motion analysis and real-time performance feedback systems for community users, schools and fitness centers.

The government also hopes data analytics can improve athlete training and help attract private-sector investment into the sports economy.

 

AI and immersive technology expand into museums and arts

Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture said it is increasingly deploying AI, immersive technologies and digital applications across museums, performing arts, film production and digital archives.

Officials said future exhibitions are expected to incorporate interactive AI systems, immersive projections and digital guides to improve audience engagement and accessibility.

The ministry said technology adoption is also intended to narrow regional gaps in cultural access and strengthen the international competitiveness of Taiwan’s creative industries.

 

Taiwan shifts focus toward AI applications in daily life

The initiatives reflect Taiwan’s broader policy shift from a traditional focus on semiconductor manufacturing toward wider applications of technology in public services and daily life.

Officials said the government aims to establish Taiwan as a globally competitive hub for smart healthcare, sports technology and cultural innovation.
